Turnstile Junkpile – Welcome!

Turnstile Junkpile are a straight up no messin’ rock’n´roll band.

For the style of music, you would expect this band to hail from the USA or perhaps Canada, but Turnstile Junkpile are a British band living in London. Whilst they are under the genre of ‘Americana’ they bring a European feel to the sound.

Style

Turnstile Junkpile are an alt-country band influenced by alt-country, sixties soul (think Gerry Rafferty), southern twang, and all in music that is beautiful, and nasty, and dirty, and funky.

Formed in around 2010, the band is named after a Townes Van Zandt song (“Well, I've been turn-styled, junk-piled and rail-roaded too. I've been laid low, but don't you know I'm still in love with you…”).

The guitar-led, retro and country-influenced sound recalls artists such as The Jayhawks and Neil Young and features appealing harmonies, pedal steel, banjo, and some serious grooves. The music creates a mood that belong in genuine Americana with banjos and guitars and a swinging rhythm topped with a British accent on vocals that draw parallels to The Kinks and Nick Lowes.

Line Up

The line-up is Mat Clark (vocals & guitars), Ben Sumner (pedal steel, banjo, lap steel, vocals), Lawrence McNamara (bass & vocals) and newest member Dave Shaw (drums). Not yet signed up to a record label, their début album “Everything Is Cheaper Than It Looks” was self-released on the band’s own Requisite Nasty label in 2012.

Album Review

Everything Is Cheaper Than It Looks

This début album from Turnstile Junkpile is recorded proof that retro can be progressive as they have created a piece of timeless quality Americana with strong contemporary lyrics penned by Mat Clark that provoke thought without being pretentious.
